Eel fishing on the Delaware Bay happens on any tide, in any weather. Hooking and winching the fykes and swinging them onto the gunwale takes on a rhythm like that of the waves. While the captain motors to his next buoy, the eeler must empty and re-bait the fyke and toss it overboard before the next one hits the gunwale. If 200 traps were set on the bottom of the bay, this procedure is patiently and skillfully repeated 200 times.
